What would the likely effect be of increasing the break angle over the saddle? Specifically in the first and second strings. I'm thinking it would cause the to drive harder. Thanks Lance |

You're thinking right. More drive, more volume, more broken strings (' ![]() |

so its safe to say, you can add brightness by doing this, im going to slot the bridge pins holes and was going to move the first and second strings just a tad closer to the saddle. |

Boy I hate to be a contrarian on this topic but here goes. In my mumble (sic) opinion break angle is mostly important on instruments that have a tail piece, like an arch top guitar or a violin, any instrument where the primary impetus of a vibrating string is to force the bridge up and down. On gutiars with the strings fastened to the bridge I think that the primary impetus to move the bridge is a rocking motion, torquing the bridge forward as the string shortens during its vibrating. Sooo, I think that break angle is important then only as it becomes an artifact of raising the saddle (and thereby incidently increasing the break angle) and that increases the moment arm of what turns out to be a lever. The longer the lever, the greater the torque on the bridge. Lance I think increasing the break angle any other way than raising the saddle, like moving the string slots closer to the saddle, would not have much effect on the sound, unless there was a problem with the string making solid enough contact with the bridge that it caused buzzing. Just my 2 cents worth John |

I'm pretty sure that once you get enough break angle, you don't benefit by increasing it. I put together a pretty good post on this over at MIMF, but I suspect that it's in the pre-archive purgitory right now. |
